We look forward to seeing you at the Potic Creek Preserve for an informal “walk and talk” about earthworms in our watershed, and their forest floor habitat. We will discuss how most (but not all) of our earthworms in New York State are non-native. And we will talk about the particularly destructive invasive species and their effects on riparian habitats. We will do some moderate hiking and will look within the leaf litter and under rocks for specimens and then discuss what we find. Appropriate for all ages.
Rebecca Pinder studies the ecology of forest floors with her students at Columbia-Greene Community College, where she is a Professor of Biological Sciences. Much of her research takes place in local streams and at a model forest near the Catskill Mountains. She explores salamander biology and behavior, asking how these essential forest creatures and their environments are affected by invasive earthworms. She has a PhD from the University at Albany and has studied salamanders and earthworms in riparian corridors for over 20 years.
