Happy Kids and Happy Birds
We had a great turnout for our annual birdhouse building event in 2018 with 40+ kids of all ages coming to the Willows to build a birdhouse and birdfeeder to take home, take a hike, learn to use binoculars, and roll down the hill.
Thanks to the Athens Sportsmen’s Club for preparing the birdhouse kits and helping with the building. And thanks to the Athens Community Foundation for helping the Sportsmen pay for the materials.
River Sweep Cleanup Saturday May 5
Spring has finally sprung and it is time to do some cleanup. Join the Greene Land Trust for the 7th Annual Riverkeeper Sweep for a bay area cleanup at Athens’ The Willows at Brandow Point. The event will be held on Saturday, May 5, 2018 from 1 to 4 PM. Low tide is at 2:11 PM. Volunteers will meet at the William Brandow House 480 State Route 385, Athens NY, where parking is available.
We ask all Sweep volunteers to wear sturdy shoes or boots, clothing that they can get dirty, and to bring a hat, sunscreen, gloves, a reusable water bottle and snacks. This site is appropriate for elementary-age children with proper adult supervision.
GLT Receives Grants
GLT is proud to announce that we have received three grants totaling more than $36,000 from the Land Trust Alliance Partnership Grant program. Most of the funds will help us to hire our first part time staff person (more about that in a few days). Remaining funds help to cover our costs for acquiring two conservation easements that were generously donated by land owners. Each of the grants requires GLT to provide a cash match from its own funds.
These grants are funded by the Environmental Protection Fund through the Department of Environmental Conservation.
Scenic Hudson acquired 145 scenic acres along Catskill Creek that have been developed by Greene Land Trust to offer new opportunities for outdoor recreation close to the Village of Catskill.
The Greene Land Trust, in cooperation with Scenic Hudson, celebrated the official opening of the trails at this property on May 12, 2018 with a ribbon cutting, brief comments from local officials, refreshments, and one mile hike.
Budding architects created some innovative homes for the fairies at the Willows at Brandow Point in 2017. Thanks to all the architects and their assistants for another fun day of fairy house building.
