Federal tax incentives for agreements that conserve land and preserve open space were made permanent in the major appropriations bill passed by Congress in December. The Enhanced Conservation Easement Tax Incentive offers a significant, long-term tax break to landowners who donate a conservation easement—a promise not to develop the land—to GLT or other land trusts. Here in New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has proposed to increase the Environmental Protection Fund from $177 million in 2015 to $300 million - the highest level in its history.
