Federal tax incentives for agreements that conserve land and preserve open space were made permanent in the major appropriations bill passed by Congress in December. The Enhanced Conservation Easement Tax Incentive offers a significant, long-term tax break to landowners who donate a conservation easement—a promise not to develop the land—to GLT or other land trusts. Additional details about the tax incentives are on the Land Trust Alliance website.

Here in New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has proposed to increase the Environmental Protection Fund from $177 million in 2015 to $300 million - the highest level in its history. This funding is a real victory for New York's environment, helping to protect open space and parks, manage solid waste, prevent pollution and more. More about EPF here.

Both of these wins have been major legislative goals for the conservation community for years.

  • Happy Kids and Happy Birds

Thanks to everyone who came out for a great event Saturday. We built more than 20 birdhouses plus feeders and nesting boxes. As an added bonus we got to learn how to use binoculars. And we had pizza to top off the morning. Thanks to volunteers from Athens Sportsmen’s Club and Greene Land Trust, and to the Athens Community Foundation for providing funding.
